Car ambient lighting without wiring: how wireless RGB LED lights work

Wireless ambient lights give your interior a soft glow without touching your car's wiring. Each light has its own USB-C rechargeable battery: you place it, switch it on with the remote and you are done. Below: how they work, where they look best, where they should not go and how to use them safely.

1. How wireless ambient lights work

Each unit is a small, self-contained LED light with a built-in rechargeable battery. There are no cables to the fuse box or the 12 V socket, and nothing in the car has to be modified. With the included remote you choose one of 8 RGB colours and switch between lighting modes. Because the lights do not depend on the car's electrics, they fit virtually any car.

2. Set of 2 or set of 4?

  • Set of 2: enough for one zone, for example the dashboard or the centre console.
  • Set of 4: lets you add the front doors or the footwells for an even, all-round look.

As with every order, you enter your car model and year in the order field. If you are unsure where the lights will fit, you can always send us a photo.

3. Where they look best

  • Dashboard: low down, along the lower edge or under a trim strip, so the light falls on the surface instead of towards you.
  • Doors: in or under the door pocket or along the armrest, so the light washes over the door trim.
  • Centre console: under the edge of the armrest or along the sides of the console, pointing down.
  • Footwell: under the dashboard, pointing at the floor. It lights up the cabin without the light itself being visible.

Rule of thumb: you should see the glow, not the light source.

4. Where not to place them

  • Not on or near airbags. Car manufacturers warn against placing objects over or near airbag modules: the steering wheel, the passenger side of the dashboard, the seat sides, and the doors and pillars where side and curtain airbags deploy. Your owner's manual shows where the airbags are in your car.
  • Not in the driver's line of sight. Not on top of the dashboard, not next to the instrument cluster and not where the light reflects in the windscreen or side windows.
  • Not near the pedals. In the driver's footwell, fit the light high up under the dashboard, well away from the pedals and the floor mat, and make sure it cannot come loose.

5. Mounting: start with a clean surface

A light only stays in place on a clean, dry surface. Wipe the spot with a damp cloth, remove grease with a little isopropyl alcohol or a mild interior cleaner, and let it dry completely. Check the position and direction in the dark before you fix the light for good, and check again after a few days that it has not shifted. On delicate surfaces such as leather or Alcantara, try a hidden spot first.

6. Charging

The lights charge via USB-C, the connector most current phones use. Take them inside to charge, or use a USB port in the car if it has one; plug in and unplug only while parked. Charging all lights at the same time keeps one from running out before the others.

7. Using them while driving

Ambient light is meant to be subtle. Light in the cabin can reflect in the windscreen and affect your night vision, which makes hazards harder to spot. Our advice:

  • choose a calm, steady colour while driving and keep changing modes for when you are parked;
  • set the colour before you drive off, so you do not reach for the remote on the road;
  • switch the lights off if they bother you or your passengers, especially in rain or fog.

Rules differ per country, and we make no claims about the law where you live. In the UK, for example, Kwik-Fit notes that no law specifically bans interior lights while driving, but the police can stop you if a light clearly affects your driving. The safe principle everywhere: interior lighting must never dazzle or distract the driver.
