Make your factory CarPlay wireless without a new radio
Your car has Apple CarPlay, but only with a cable? You do not need a new radio to change that. A wireless adapter goes into the USB port your car already uses for CarPlay: you get in, start the car and CarPlay starts by itself, with your iPhone in your pocket. The factory screen, steering-wheel buttons and sound system stay exactly as they are. The one condition: your car has wired CarPlay from the factory.

1. Your options at a glance
- Check first whether your car is already wireless. It costs nothing and takes a minute (see step 2).
- A wireless adapter in the existing USB port: no installation, no tools, and the car's own screen and controls keep working.
- A new aftermarket radio with wireless CarPlay: this means taking out the factory unit and fitting a new one. If you are happy with your factory screen, the adapter is the simpler route.
2. Check whether your car already has wireless CarPlay
According to Apple, an iPhone may offer to connect wirelessly for your next drives after you plug it in over USB. You can also press and hold the voice button on the steering wheel, or put the car in wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode and look on your iPhone under Settings > General > CarPlay > Available Cars. If your iPhone connects to CarPlay without a cable, your car is already wireless and you do not need the adapter.
3. How the adapter makes factory CarPlay wireless
- The adapter replaces the cable, not the radio. It plugs into the CarPlay USB port, so your car keeps using its own CarPlay.
- Your iPhone connects to the adapter wirelessly. You pair it once via Bluetooth; after that the connection uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, just like wireless CarPlay in cars that have it built in.
- Everything else stays the same: touchscreen, steering-wheel buttons, Siri, speakers and microphone.
- 2-in-1: the same adapter also makes wired Android Auto wireless, if your car has it.
Because the adapter uses your car's own CarPlay, it cannot add CarPlay to a car that does not have it.
4. Does your car qualify? The 1-minute test
- Start the car and wait until the screen is fully on.
- Connect your iPhone to a USB port with a cable. Apple notes that the right port may be marked with a CarPlay icon or a smartphone icon.
- CarPlay appears: your car has the wired CarPlay the adapter needs. The adapter goes into exactly that port.
- Nothing appears: try the other USB ports and another good cable, because some ports only charge. If CarPlay does not appear on any port, your car most likely does not have it, and the adapter will not add it.
Passed the test? Then you do not need a new radio. Order the adapter and enter your car model and year in the order field.
5. Set it up in 3 steps
- Plug in: start the car, unplug the iPhone cable and plug the adapter into the USB port that worked in the test.
- Pair once: switch on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your iPhone, choose the adapter in the Bluetooth list (not the car) and follow the manual.
- Confirm: accept the CarPlay prompt on your iPhone. After that, it should connect by itself every time you get in.
6. What changes without the cable
- Your iPhone does not charge via the USB port, because the port now powers the adapter. Use a charger or the car's wireless charging pad on long drives.
- Battery use is higher, because the connection uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
- A short delay is possible, mostly with audio, for example when you skip a track.
- One phone at a time: if two paired phones are in the car, switch off Bluetooth on the one you do not want to use.
7. Questions
- Do I need a software update or a visit to the dealer? No. The adapter only needs the wired CarPlay your car already has. There is nothing to install in the car.
- Will Siri and the steering-wheel buttons still work? Yes. If the voice button starts Siri with the cable, it does the same with the adapter. Calls use the car's speakers and microphone.
- And with an Android phone? The same adapter makes wired Android Auto wireless. Read how the adapter works with Android Auto.
