Putting an AMG badge on a non-AMG Mercedes: what to know

Plenty of Mercedes owners like the look of AMG lettering on the rear, even if their car did not leave the factory as an AMG. That is entirely up to you, as long as you know what the badge does and does not mean. Here is a neutral overview before you fit one.

1. It is a cosmetic change

An emblem changes how the rear of your car looks, and nothing else. It does not change the engine, the performance or what is in your car's papers.

2. AMG model, AMG Line and a badge: the difference

  • Mercedes-AMG models are the high-performance cars: they have more powerful engines and performance-oriented technology such as AMG suspension.
  • AMG Line is a styling package on regular Mercedes models. According to a UK Mercedes-Benz dealer, it adds cosmetic differences such as a different grille, sportier bumpers, larger alloy wheels, sport seats and stainless steel pedals, while the engine stays the same.
  • An AMG emblem on its own is lettering on the rear. On a car with AMG Line it continues the sporty styling the car already has; on a car without it, it is a styling choice of its own.

3. Where to put it

There is no single rule for every Mercedes: badge positions differ between models and generations. The best guide is a factory photo of your exact model and year, for example in the Mercedes-Benz configurator or a dealer's photos, so the emblem sits where lettering looks natural on that car. Wherever you put it, line it up with the existing badges: the same baseline, and the same distance from the edge of the trunk lid as the badge on the other side. Our fitting guide shows how to make a masking-tape template for this.

4. When you sell the car

The badge does not change what is in the car's papers, and buyers who are interested in a real AMG will check the specification anyway. Tastes differ: some buyers like the look, others prefer a car exactly as it left the factory. To avoid any confusion, simply mention in your ad that the AMG emblem was added. Because the emblem is fixed with adhesive tape, it can also be removed later with gentle heat and fishing line, as described in our fitting guide.

5. Gloss black or chrome?

The emblem comes in two colours. Which one suits your car depends on your paint and trim; see AMG emblem in gloss black or chrome: which suits your Mercedes?

6. Fitting

Checking the 19 × 2 cm size, removing an old badge, positioning and fitting are all covered step by step in AMG rear emblem on your Mercedes trunk: size, placement and fitting.

7. Ordering

Choose gloss black or chrome on the product page. When you order, enter your car model and year in the order field. When in doubt, send us a photo of the rear of your car via our contact page and we'll gladly take a look.
