Wireless CarPlay for the VW Tiguan: make your factory CarPlay wireless
Get in, drive off and leave your phone in your pocket: with a wireless adapter, CarPlay or Android Auto starts by itself on your Tiguan's screen. There is one condition: your Tiguan must already have wired CarPlay or Android Auto from the factory, which Volkswagen calls App-Connect. That is usually the case from the Tiguan 2 of 2016 onwards. Check it below in one minute, or go straight to the wireless CarPlay and Android Auto adapter.
- Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto in one adapter, for iPhone and Android.
- Plugs into the existing USB port your VW uses for App-Connect.
- Pair once, then it connects by itself when you get in.
- No installation and no tools, nothing to take apart.
- Works with your VW's own screen and controls, speakers and microphone.
1. Does your Tiguan qualify? The 1-minute test
Switch on the infotainment system and connect your phone with a USB cable.
- CarPlay or Android Auto appears on the screen: your VW qualifies. The adapter goes into exactly that USB port.
- Nothing appears: try another USB port and a good cable. Many VWs have several ports and some only charge. Apple notes that the right port may be marked with a CarPlay or smartphone icon.
- Still nothing: your VW most likely has no App-Connect, and the adapter will not add it. See the questions below for the dealer activation.
Test with the phone you will use: an iPhone for CarPlay, an Android phone for Android Auto. Newer VWs often have USB-C ports instead of the older USB-A type. Enter your model and year in the order field and we check it before we ship.
Passed the test? Then your VW is ready: order the adapter.
2. Which Tiguan generations usually have wired CarPlay
Volkswagen calls CarPlay and Android Auto in the Tiguan App-Connect. Whether your Tiguan has it depends mainly on the generation and the infotainment system:
- Tiguan 1 / 5N (2007–2016, facelift 2011): usually no factory CarPlay. App-Connect only arrived in 2015, and older infotainment systems cannot be upgraded to it. Only some of the last cars can have it: in August 2015 Volkswagen listed the Tiguan among the models that could be ordered with App-Connect, and in the US the 2016 Tiguan got the MIB II infotainment with App-Connect.
- Tiguan 2 / AD1 (2016–2020): with Composition Media, Discover Media or Discover Pro, App-Connect usually works via USB cable, as standard or as an option. In the UK, for example, every new Tiguan had at least Composition Media with an 8-inch touchscreen, and App-Connect was standard on most versions. If it is missing, Volkswagen Germany names the Tiguan 2 as an example of a model from model year 2016 that can get App-Connect as an activation at a Volkswagen partner, with Composition Colour or Discover Media. This is the typical Tiguan for the adapter.
- Tiguan Allspace (long version, from 2017): usually has the same infotainment as the Tiguan 2 of the same year, so App-Connect via cable. With its 2021 facelift it got the MIB3 infotainment with App-Connect Wireless and two USB-C ports.
- Tiguan 2 facelift (2020–2024): the update brought the MIB3 infotainment with App-Connect Wireless for CarPlay and Android Auto, so the phone usually already connects without a cable and you do not need the adapter. If yours only shows CarPlay or Android Auto with a cable, the adapter makes it wireless.
- Tiguan 3 (from 2024): with the new MIB4 infotainment and a 12.9-inch screen (15 inches as an option), wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are usually standard. If your phone already connects without a cable, you do not need the adapter.
The R-Line versions and the Tiguan R and eHybrid, which arrived with the 2020 facelift, usually follow the same generations. Equipment differs by country, model year and options, so the cable test is decisive.
3. Set it up in your Tiguan in 3 steps
- Plug in: start the car, wait until the infotainment system is fully on and plug the adapter into the USB port that passed the test.
- Pair once: switch on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your phone and pair it with the adapter, following the manual. Choose the adapter in the list, not the car.
- Confirm: accept the CarPlay or Android Auto prompt on your phone. From then on it connects by itself when you get in, as long as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on.
4. Questions from Tiguan drivers
- Does it work with Composition Media, Discover Media or Discover Pro in the Tiguan? Yes, as long as CarPlay or Android Auto appears there with a cable. The adapter only replaces the cable; the name of the system does not matter.
- I drive a Tiguan 1. Can I still get CarPlay? Usually not with the adapter: most Tiguan 1s were built before App-Connect, and older infotainment systems cannot be upgraded to it. Only some of the last cars from model year 2016 can have it. Do the cable test: if nothing appears, the adapter will not help.
- My Tiguan already connects without a cable. Do I need the adapter? Not for CarPlay. From the 2020 facelift (Allspace from 2021) the Tiguan usually has App-Connect Wireless, and in the Tiguan 3 wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are usually standard. If one of the two only works with a cable in your car, the adapter can make it wireless.
- Which USB port in the Tiguan do I use? The port where CarPlay or Android Auto appeared in the cable test. Not every port transfers data; some only charge. From the facelift onwards the Tiguan has USB-C ports at the front; on an older Tiguan, check whether your port is USB-A or USB-C.
- My VW has no App-Connect. Does the adapter help? No, the adapter does not add CarPlay or Android Auto. For many models from model year 2016 with a suitable infotainment system, Volkswagen Germany offers App-Connect as an activation at a Volkswagen partner. Once it works with a cable, the adapter can make it wireless.
- My VW only has CarPlay, or only Android Auto, via cable. The adapter makes wireless what your car supports with a cable. Run the test with the phone you will actually use.
- Will the steering-wheel buttons and Siri or Google Assistant still work? Yes. If the voice button starts Siri or the Google Assistant with the cable, it works the same way wirelessly. Calls use the car's speakers and microphone.
- What about lag, charging and battery? A wireless connection can react slightly slower than a cable, mostly noticeable with audio, for example when you skip a track. Your phone no longer charges via that USB port and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi use more battery, so use a charger or a wireless charging pad on long drives. For wireless Android Auto, Google lists Android 11 or later and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
