Wireless CarPlay for Kia Sportage: make your factory CarPlay wireless

With a wireless adapter you get into your Kia Sportage, start the car and drive off: CarPlay or Android Auto starts by itself and your phone stays in your pocket or bag. There is one condition: your Sportage already has wired Apple CarPlay or Android Auto from the factory. That is usually the case with the navigation system of the Sportage QL from model year 2017, with the touchscreens of the facelifted QL from 2018 and with the 12.3-inch navigation of the Sportage NQ5 from 2022. You can check it in one minute below.

View the 2-in-1 wireless CarPlay and Android Auto adapter

1. What the adapter does in your Kia Sportage

  • Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto in one adapter: iPhone and Android.
  • Plugs into the existing USB port your Kia Sportage uses for CarPlay or Android Auto.
  • Pair once, then the phone connects by itself.
  • No installation, no tools: nothing changes in the car.
  • Your Kia Sportage's own screen and controls keep working: touchscreen, steering-wheel buttons, speakers and microphone.

2. Does your Kia Sportage qualify? The 1-minute test

  1. Start the car and wait until the touchscreen is fully on.
  2. Connect your phone to a USB port with a cable: an iPhone for CarPlay, an Android phone for Android Auto.
  • CarPlay or Android Auto appears: your Kia Sportage has the connection the adapter needs. The adapter goes into exactly that USB port.
  • Nothing appears: try the other USB ports and a good cable, because some ports only charge. If nothing appears on any port, your Kia Sportage most likely has no CarPlay or Android Auto, and the adapter will not add it.

Passed the test? Then your Kia Sportage has what the adapter needs. Order the adapter and enter your Kia Sportage's generation and year in the order field.

3. Which Kia Sportage generations have wired CarPlay

What your Sportage has depends mainly on the generation and on the touchscreen:

  • Sportage QL (2016–2018): the first cars of the fourth-generation Sportage did not have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto yet. Kia added both with the 2017 model-year update (from around the turn of 2016/2017), in combination with the navigation system and connected by USB cable. Sportages from 2016 and versions without navigation usually have no CarPlay.
  • Sportage QL facelift (2018–2021): the facelifted Sportage has a 7-inch touchscreen or a new frameless 8-inch navigation system. Both usually offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto by cable; in the UK, for example, every version had it. This is a Sportage where the adapter makes a lot of sense.
  • Sportage NQ5 (revealed in 2021, in Europe from early 2022): versions with the 12.3-inch navigation touchscreen (in Germany, for example, from the Vision trim) have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto only by USB cable, according to ADAC's test. This is the most common case for the adapter. Entry versions with the 8-inch touchscreen without navigation (in Germany the Edition 7) usually connect wirelessly already, because Kia's systems without built-in navigation already offer wireless CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • Sportage NQ5 facelift (from the second half of 2025): according to Kia, the updated Sportage has the ccNC system with two curved 12.3-inch displays and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You usually do not need the adapter for CarPlay; check Android Auto separately with your phone.

These are the usual equipment levels; versions and markets differ. The cable test is decisive.

4. Set it up in your Kia Sportage in 3 steps

  1. Plug in: start the car, unplug the phone cable and plug the adapter into the USB port that worked in the test.
  2. Pair once: switch on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your phone, choose the adapter in the Bluetooth list (not the car) and follow the manual.
  3. Confirm: accept the CarPlay or Android Auto prompt on your phone. After that, the phone should connect by itself every time you get in.

5. Questions from Kia Sportage drivers

  • Does it work with the 12.3-inch navigation in the Sportage NQ5, including the Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid? Yes, if the screen shows Apple CarPlay or Android Auto with a cable, which is usually the case. In its test of the Sportage Plug-in Hybrid, ADAC noted that the phone can only be mirrored to the central screen with a USB cable. With the adapter, CarPlay or Android Auto still runs on the Sportage's own screen.
  • Which USB port in the Sportage? The one where the test worked. Not every USB socket carries data; some only charge. The Sportage NQ5 has a USB-A and a USB-C socket at the front, so try both; the USB-C sockets on the sides of the front seats are charging sockets.
  • Will a software update make my Sportage NQ5 wireless? Usually not. The update Kia and Hyundai announced in September 2023 is for models with the newer ccNC system, and in 2023 Kia said that its previous-generation navigation systems lack the hardware for wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. The adapter makes the existing wired connection wireless.
  • My Kia Sportage only shows Android Auto (or only CarPlay) with a cable. Does the adapter help? Only for that system. The adapter does not add a system your Kia Sportage lacks. For wireless Android Auto, Google lists a phone with Android 11 or later and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  • Will the steering-wheel buttons and Siri or Google Assistant still work? Yes. If the voice button starts Siri or the Google Assistant with the cable, it does the same with the adapter. Calls use the car's speakers and microphone.
  • Lag and battery? Wireless can respond slightly slower than a cable, mostly with audio, such as a short delay when you skip a track. Your phone no longer charges via the USB port and uses more battery, so use a charger on long drives.
